Ear Insufflations

WHAT ARE EAR INSUFFLATIONS?

During ear insufflations ozone/oxygen gas mix is slowly introduced into the ears via a modified stethoscope. The ear canal produces a waxy substance which allows the lipophilic ozone to penetrate and saturate the whole brain and sinus area. Many people report immediate improvement in mood or relief from symptoms like brain fog after doing ear insufflations.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED?

Here is the basic set-up in order to perform ear insufflations.

You need:

1. Oxygen source (tank or concentrator) with a low flow regulator

2. Ozone generator

3. Trap

4. Earscope

5. Mask

This is what you need in order to perform ear insufflations: an oxygen source (either a tank with a pediatric or low flow regulator, or an oxygen concentrator with a low flow regulator), an ozone generator, a trap, and an earscope

1. Oxygen source:

Either an oxygen tank or an oxygen concentrator can be used which produces oxygen of at least 90% purity. Also make sure you have a low flow regulator attached to the tank or concentrator. You should be able to achieve low oxygen flows of 1/8 LPM or below, so 1/16 or 1/32 LPM. Low flows are particularly important during EI in order to reduce the risk of blowing your ear drum.

2. Ozone generator:

It should be an oxygen fed generator which can produce ozone concentrations at the above mentioned oxygen flows in the 5 to 50 mcg/ml range. Consult the technical specifications on generators on this page.

3. Trap:

serves to muzzle the noise of the ozone generator. It remains empty during the treatment. If you use Promolife ozone generators you may even do without the trap since they are exceptionally quiet. Other generators like the Longevity for example tend to be quite loud and you will definitely need the trap.

4. Earscope:

t transports the ozone gas into the ears. Some earscopes are simply modified stethoscopes, so instead of transporting sound they transport gas. The Promolife earscope is not a modified stethoscope, it has been designed specifically for ear insufflations.

5. Mask:

during EI there will be some ozone escaping your ears. In order to prevent you from breathing it, I highly recommend wearing a mask during the procedure. It filters out ozone and protects your lungs. A fan is also an option.

trap to collect backflowing water and to protect the ozone generator. Make sure you connect it with the other equipment in the correct order. A more affordable way is to buy a gas washing bottle on amazon but you will likely need different sized silicone tubing.

In my opinion the best earscope for ear insufflation is sold by Promolife and is made out of highly ozone resistant teflon.

One of the best ways to protect yourself from breathing the escaping ozone: a mask with either a #2097 or #2128 filter.

ALTERNATIVE SETUP WITH A HUMIDIFIER

Some people prefer to use a humidifier for ear insufflations. In which case the setup looks as above. Make sure you still use the trap in addition to the humidifier. The trap prevents water from flowing into the ozone generator. Alternatively, you can also use a check valve

HOW TO PERFORM EAR INSUFFLATIONS?

1. Connect the oxygen source with the ozone generator, plug both into the power supply (if necessary).

2. Connect the trap with the ozone generator and the earscope as shown in the picture above. Make sure the ozone output hose of the ozone generator goes into the right port of the trap. [If you use a humidifier, make sure it’s connected in the right order as well, see below.]3. Put the mask on.

4. Open the oxygen, set it at 1/8 LPM

5. Turn on the ozone generator, choose an ozone concentration between 5 and 50 mcg/ml. For beginners lower ozone concentrations are preferable.

6. Put the earscope over your ears, and enjoy!

7. Read a book or work on your laptop. Start with 1 to 3 minutes maximum 3 times per week. Do this for several weeks to 3 months. If there is no itching, no scabbing, no liquid discharge, and no pain, increase slowly until you reach 20 min and concentrations of around 50 mcg/ml.

FAQ

1. Do I have to use a humidifier when doing EI?

No, you don't. A humidifier is not necessary for EI.

Some still prefer to humidify ozone during EI. There is a pro and con for humidification: the con is that oil and water repel each other. Why is this relevant for EI? Your ears produce an oily substance. Ozone is lipophilic, meaning it bonds with oils easily. When the ozone is humidified it may bond less well with the oils in your ears and could render the protocol less effective. The pro is that since during EI there is a considerable risk of developing significant adverse reactions (see below under Risks and How To Prevent Them), the reduced efficacy of the procedure when using humidification may in fact lessen the risk of pain, liquid discharge, and itching.

2. I've done EI and now my ears hurt really badly. What can I do?

Stop ALL ozone applications. Wait until the pain subsides completely. This can take several days up to 2 weeks. After that you can restart with a reduced ozone concentration and a reduced amount of time.

3. The risks sound quite horrific. is there a way to prevent them?

Yes, start VERY SLOW AND LOW. Don't do more than 1 to 3 minutes of EI 3 times a week in the beginning. Use ozone concentrations of 5 to 10 mcg/ml. Stay at that level for several months. If there is no pain, liquid discharge, or itching in that time, increase slowly by 1 minute every few weeks. If everything goes well, you can do up to 20 min of EI per day at a concentration of 40 to 50 mcg/ml. It may take you a year to get to that point.

4. My ears itch unbearably. What can I do about it?

Apply an anti-inflammatory ointment or any cream you like. Wait until the itching resolves completely before doing EI again. Then reduce ozone concentration and duration of the EI.

5. I hear the machine really loud through the earscopes. Can this damage my ears?

If your machine is loud, you should definitely use an empty trap to muzzle the noise, see the pictures above.

6. I have Lyme disease. How often do I need to do this in order to get rid of the infection?

Lyme tends to be a systemic infection, EI are a local treatment. So it's very unlikely that EI alone will get rid of the infection but they may help you with some of the symptoms. In order to treat Lyme you may have to do systemic treatments like IV ozone or ozone saunas plus other approaches.

7. I have everything hooked up properly but I don't feel any effect. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure the trap and / or the humidifier are connected correctly, see picture. The hose which transports the ozone into the trap / humidifier has to be connected with the port on the glass ware which leads to the stem.

The correct order in which to connect the trap is “ozone generator – trap – humidifier – earscope”. Make sure you attach the tubing with the correct inlets/outlets on the glass ware.

RISKS AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

The risks with EI are substantial and should be read by everyone who thinks about performing ear insufflations.

  • Excruciating pain in and behind the ears. As good as everyone I know who has experienced it, decided to go to the ER or to the doctor. The pain can be absolutely mind numbing. It's most likely due to the lymph fluid buildup which is triggered by EI. The good news is that once the pain subsides there is no damage, so it's “just” pain. The best way to avoid it is by going VERY slow with EI: not more than 1 or 3 minutes every few days in the beginning. Keep at that level for up to 2 to 3 months. If in that time there is no pain, no discharge, no debilitating itching, increase slowly by one minute. Also use very low ozone concentrations. Go as low as 5 mcg/ml if needed. If nevertheless you develop pain, stop ALL ozone applications until the pain fully subsides. This can take up to 10 days.

  • Itching, liquid discharge, scabbing, redness. It's assumed that this is due to oxidized lymph fluid. The itching can become especially daunting during sleep. Apply ointments or oils to soothe the skin and reduce ozone concentration and/or frequency of applications.

  • Tinnitus. If no trap is used to muzzle the noise, or if the machine is too loud, a constant buzzing sound can develop. Usually, it passes after a few hours. In rare cases it can be permanent.

Paola, I had a severe intense case of SARS-2/covid in September 2022 with the worst sinus infection ever. A neti pot took care of the infection, but soon after, I developed so many eye floaters I could not see through them. I also developed upper back, flank and upper gluteal pain bilaterally. I tried EI and the floaters and upper back pain went away completely. I tried it a second time, and it worsened the pain in the flank, upper glutes and upper thighs bilaterally until it was excruciating. It finally subsided about two weeks after treatment. At this time, I have heard that shingles was going around. I have had shingles fives times. Could this pain in the flank area be due to the herpes dying off? I checked to see if the areas I had pain were involved with the herpes zoster, and they were. Or could this just be the covid finally dying off? I am hesitant to try ozone again, though once the pain has subsided I feel so much better, almost childlike again. Thank you!

      Hi Paula,

It's really difficult for me to tell what was going on based on your description …

But, if you say that once the pain has subsided you felt significantly better than before you did the ozone (if I understand this correctly), then it is very likely that the ozone had triggered a herx reaction.

I have found out that if I do my treatment just before my shower, and wash my ears inside and out with soap on my finger tip using a twisting motion with finger inside the ear, then rinsing well while twisting finger again, that this will remove the ozone film or coating from your skin and cut down or stop the reaction or any pain or draining from the ear.

Thoughts on using a syringe with tip like one for nasal insufflations (from promolife) to do ear insufflations after ear is pre moistened? ( I have seen Truly Heal YouTUbe Video on this technique) VS. Doing sessions with EI Stethoscope? I have heard issues from a friend using stethoscope having los of ear itching and pressure after stethoscope. I am trying to avoid adverse reactions I typically need to go slow as I am sensitive to things. Thank you for your feedback.

      Hi Marie,

do you mean using the syringe cover: https://thepowerofozone.com///hvps

If so, yes you can do it.

Or you can attach the syringe to the earscope and push the ozone that way instead of letting the ozone flow straight from the machine.

    Hi Paola,
I'm enamored with your site. I have a loaner machine for a month. I am a cancer survivor, 15 years, with a suppressed immune system. Chemo turned my asthma into COPD. I have chronic lung infections. I'm not very tolerant of ozone gas in my lungs. The ear insufflation setup that I was given lets off quite a bit of ozone gas. I tried to find the mask you suggest. It's nowhere to be found. Any further suggestions?
    Thank you.

      Hi Jody,

the alternative is to put a fan in front of you and have it blow in your face and the ozone away from you.

Also, try to keep the chin up, or at least straight, but not down. So when you read while you do EI, keep the book or phone up, so that it's level with your eyes.

Since ozone is heavier than air, it will prevent it from pouring it out of the ears and into your nose.

Another possible solution: use a low oxygen flow of 1/16 or even 1/32, but adjust the ozone concentration, so that it's not too high when you do it.

Yet another solution: don't do it through the machine, but fill a syringe first and then attach the syringe to the earscope and press the ozone into it, slowly, and while keeping chin up as described above.

      Hope this helps.

I do ear insufflations everyday as well as nasal 2x a week, dental 3x week. I do everything through my water bubbler.
I started noticing after a month of doing the ears everyday that I was getting serious dark circles under my eyes and the skin under my eyes had lost it's firmness and had many fine wrinkles – I looked like my friends who smoke.
I looked it up and apparently smoking has substances that affect the elasticity of the skin – the collegen and also diminishes the vitamin C.
Since ozone is an oxidation therapy, is it possible that the gas coming from my ear, nasal, or dental insufflation could be affecting my skin in this way? That the ozone is destroying the collegen in my skin, especially under the eyes?
I started “protecting” my eyes and skin with a pinon salve whenever I use ozone and the bags and dark circles went away. I'm also putting Vitamin C cream under my eyes as well as taking more Vitamin C.

      Hi Sharon,

ozone is said to stimulate collagen production, which is what it's used for in Russia.

The first time I used an ozone cream, I could see a distinct improvement in wrinkles under my eyes. I could not recreate it since, but then I also suffer from connective tissue disorder and my body does not produce collagen properly, so not sure how informative this is for others.

      Hi Paola,

Thanks for your answer. Is there a difference between ozone cream and ozonated oil? Where could one get ozone cream?
So do you know of any side-effects of ozonated gas contacting skin?

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Sharon,

yes, the ozone cream can contain many other ingredients, like usual creams. You can read the full ingredient list here: https://thepowerofozone.com///i16e

Ozonated oil means just the oil with the ozone.

If ozone gas gets in contact with dry skin not much happens, although it depends at which concentration and how long the exposure is.

If the skin is moist, then some absorption appears to take place.

When you put ozonated creams or oils on the skin, then you moisturize it and in addition the ozone is supposed to stimulate collagen production, and possibly remove dead skin cells and lead to a rejuvenation of the skin.

I did notice a marked improvement in my wrinkles when I first started using a certain ozone cream years ago. But then it appears I could not recreated that effect any more. And I suffer from a connective tissue disorder, so not sure how representative my results are.

      I hope this helps!

I have been using Ozone Ear Insufflations at home for about 2 years now. I had heard about some of the good results and so looked online for a place to get treated and see for myself if there was any truth to it before buying one. I had a tumor near my voice box they wanted to remove along with my voice box, which would have left a hole in my neck. I told them NO then tried the ozone. The Ozone shrunk the tumor as well as my huge swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Also an unexpected benefit of it completely drying out the fluid in my lungs by killing all the bacteria in the phlegm that I've struggled breathing with for 2-3 years because of fluid around the heart and in lungs 24-7. (now gone) Yes, after finding this out for myself, I ordered the Ozone equipment I needed online from both ebay and amazon, and usually have 2-3 fifteen min treatments a week. I never get sick (over 2 years) and feel and breath great now. If you have ear problems when you start treatments (I never did) use less at first.

      Hi Jeff,

thank you for this super inspiring story!
May I ask: once the tumor shrunk did you then have the surgery to remove the remainder of the tumor or did the tumor then disappeared completely or did it shrink and you are keeping it at that low level with continued ear insufflations?

      Best,

    • Jeff Leonard

All the pain and swelling in my neck and throat went away after just a few treatments. I then bought my own equipment online and continued my own treatments at about 40 units for 15 min, 2-3 times a week. A few months went by and I had it rechecked (tumor) while at the Hospital for blood work. They were surprised to tell me the results that the tumor has shrunk to a very small size, and hopefully will go away completely on its own. That was about a year and a half ago, and I haven't gone back since. I'm feeling fine with no more pain or swelling. I have not had any tests since then, so don't know for sure if it went away completely. But it sure feels like it's gone. Anyway, I will continue with my treatments because of all the positive health benefits I continue to receive from using Ozone. The ear insufflations are great because it's so simple to use. I did notice an itchy feeling a few times after use so cleaned my ear right after treatment with a couple of sprays of Hydrogen Peroxide, dried it out with q-tips. That removed the Ozone gas residue film from the skinn, which may be slightly toxic and cause the itching and other related problems people sometimes report. Ozone will travel all around in your head through tiny vent passages etc. You may even taste and smell it for a few hours after treatment. This shows that it gets around and does its work. If you have pain in the treatment area, it will soon go away along with the swelling. If you feel like you are getting the flu, use your Ozone to knock it dead on the spot, since it kills all germs and viruses instantly on contact. Using ear insufflations will completely treat your sinuses, throat, and lungs, even if indirectly because enough of it will seep all around that area and do its job! You will start to see the pain and swelling go away after around just 3 treatments. I would recommend at least 12 treatments. The longer you use Ozone, the more it permeates your body and even will show up in your bone marrow after 6 months of treatments. I myself have never been made sick from using Ozone for over 2 years now. If I stop using it, troubles can start to return after a few weeks or so. (lungs start to fill with fluid again) Still I would recommend its use if you have the same problems. It seems to be a real lifesaver for me!

I did a few ear insulflations on a very low setting and only for 30 seconds to a minute more than a month ago now. They were spaced out over two weeks or so and just a few days a week. I developed an incredible amount of pain in my ears though one ear was definitely worse than the other. I’m still having flares of pain though it doesn’t last long. One ear often feels blocked as it does when you fly. I’ve never had any ear issues in the past. Is there anything else I can do for my ears? At times it feels like there is fluid draining but when I check my ears there isn’t any fluid. I had a lot of drainage when I did the insulflations. Thanks for all the great info you share. A systemic treatment like ozone saunas, or IVs at your doctor's, or doing hydrogen peroxide bathes is a good idea.

I am sorry you are now having a constant hissing sound, but unfortunately I can't tell you if it will go away.

My suspicion is that it could have been caused by oxalate crystals being moved around.

my son is on dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant I have an ozone generator, can I do the ear insufflation
on him and why not when he gets the transplant he will be on immunosuppressive drugs

      Hi Bonnie,
I would not do any type of ozone applications immediately before the transplant.
This could ramp up your son's immune system to the point that the rejection of the new kidney is more likely.
Under no circumstances should any type of ozone be performed after a transplant for the same reason.

Hi is it usefull for hearing deficiency.

    • paola d

      Hi Jagedeesh,

it depends what the hearing deficiency is caused by.
If it is due to an infection, inflammation, or due to oxalates, EI could possibly help.

I had ozone administered to my ear and now I have excruciating ice pick like pain and headache it’s neen 5 days- what now?

    • paola d

      Hi Dana,

it appears you are going through the dreaded Herxheimer reaction after EI.
The pain will subside by itself, but it can take up to 2 weeks. Please, do not do any form of ozone in that time.

Is ozone may help in treatment of brain cancer?

    Reply

      Hi Saugat,
      yes, it may.
But it is often a good idea to look what other factors are at play, like mercury toxicity, or what diet the patient has.

hello as akid i was always having earaches. now i seem to be lightheaded, aggraveted by rational movements etc, etc. have had severe vertigo in past. i have chronic sinus. do u think ozone treatment in the ear canal would help this disabling lightheadedness

      Hi Rick,
ozone could offer a temporary improvement, but probably not a lasting solution. But I don't know … Try it out!

Is ear pain the only adverse reaction from EI? Sometimes I think it gives me a bad headache and makes me irritable, but it is hard to be certain since I am never sure exactly what brings on my symptoms.

When I drink ozone water it sometimes makes me feel a little better and I never get a headache or have an adverse reaction from it.

    • paola d

      Hi Rob,
there can be pain, itchiness, liquid drainage, crusting etc. I have also known a few people who experienced a worsening of headaches after EI. I see no reason why EI would not be able to give other adverse reactions as well. See if you start experiencing the headaches and irritability, if taking Vit C right afterwards makes them go away. If yes, then the cause was likely the EI. If no, then it was unlikely related to the EI.

    Hi Paola,
My new ozone generator from Promolife does not make any noise. Do you still recommend the humidity bottle to dampen the sound to protect our ears?
    Kind regards,
    Shannon

      Hi Shannon,
even though from the outside it may appear as if the Promolife generator didn't make any sound, once you put the stethoscope on, there can be an uncomfortable humming sound there. You would have to try it out and see how much of an issue it is for you. If it doesn't bother you, then yes, you can leave out the empty humidifier.

    • Diane

Dr. Rowans book mentions if your ear oozes then too stop the EI's? Do you agree. I have had oozing and crustiness mostly during the night. Awake with both ears like this.

    • paola d

      Hi Diane,
      yes, I agree with that.

WHAT COULD BE THE CAUSE OF ITCHING IN EAR AFTER EI OF OZONE .ANY ALLERGY OR OTHER REACTION?

    Reply
    • paola d

      Hi Dr. R, K.DAve

the itching is a detox reaction.
It is most likely due to an inflammatory process which is triggered by the oxidized toxins.
There is often also discharge, crusting, and oozing.

      Hope this helps …

This site's goal is to inform people about the pros and cons about home ozone applications, so that they understand its limitations and are able to make an informed judgement if this is something they feel capable enough to do at home or not.
It seems this goal has been met 100% in this case …

    Hello,
I am set up for ozone therapy and have been doing so for several months. I'd like to start taking it while on the pc via my ears. My question is, where can I get the connectors that are shown on the photo showing the examples of two modified stethoscopes? I am using these now and I'd rather not switch and have to contend with two different types of connectors.

Will the ears ever clean out the lymph fluids entirely ? It is extremely difficult, at least for me, to manage EI properly

    Reply
    • paola d

Yes, they will. But it can take a long time …
Doing additional ozone treatments could help speed up the process.

    • Alexa

Why does ear insufflation of ozone cause lymphatic fluid to drain from the ears? Does this only happen if there is an infection?

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Alexa,

honestly, it's not clear if it's lymph fluid or maybe spinal fluid. But no, that does not happen only with an infection. I think it happens to the majority of people if they do the EI long enough and with high enough concentration.

    • Alexa

Thank you. What is the normal color of the drainage that occurs following EI? At what time/concentration of EI do you expect to start seeing drainage?

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Alexa,

the drainage is usually transparent colorless liquid.

The wax tends to be yellowish to orange colored.

The drainage can happen at any point of the treatment. Some see it after the first EI, others after several weeks of doing EI, but it appears in 9 out of 10 times in my estimate, it's just a matter of time.

Hi Paola, The new promolife Arc plus generator at 1/8 has a starting gamma of 41 mcg but i hear that is best to start at about 20 mcg EI. What to do if starting mcg is 41 at 1/8 LPM?

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi dario,

I suggest to use the 200 ml syringe and fill it with first 2/3 pure oxygen, and only 1/3 ozone, then increase it to 1/2 and 1/2, later to 1/3 and 2/3 and so on.
      Here is the syringe: https://thepowerofozone.com///PLsyr200

You can attach it to the earscopes via a luer lock connector.
