How to Make Ozonated Water (for Drinking)?

9 water intro o copy

Ozonated water is one of the most popular ways to use ozone in a therapeutic way. It is easy to produce, low risk, and can have profound medicinal value.

Ozonated water is made by running ozone gas through water. Special ozone resistant stones produce tiny bubbles which allow the gas to be suspended in water temporarily.

For the best quality of ozonated water, it’s recommended to use an ozone generator which runs on pure oxygen as the feed gas (instead of air).

What equipment do you need for making ozone water?

9 ozonated water with trap overview equipment

You need the following equipment to be able to make ozonated water of high quality:

  1. Oxygen source with a low flow regulator
  2. Ozone generator
  3. Accessories: silicone tubing, luer lock connectors, water bubbler, trap
  4. Breathing protection: a destructor attached to the water bubbler

Scroll down to find a list with the equipment I used on this page.

FAQs about ozonated water

What type of water is the best to ozonate?

The best type of water to ozonate is cold, distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water. The less minerals, the colder, and the more acidic water is, the more ozone it can hold for a longer time.

Tip: Put a few ice cubes into the water bubbler, or to make a mix out of 50/50 refrigerated and room temperature water.

Can you store ozonated water?

Yes, you can store ozonated water in the fridge for several days. For best effect though, it's recommended to drink freshly ozonated water since it's holds the most ozone charge.

Recommended equipment for making ozonated water

This is the equipment I used in the pictures above:

1. Oxygen source: an industrial oxygen tank (either an empty tank from Promolife, or a full industrial tank from amazon), with an industrial low-flow regulator.

2. Ozone generator: Promolife O3Elite Dual Cell ozone generator

3. Accessories: a trap, ca. 5 feet of silicone tubing, luer lock connectors, 1,000 ml water bubbler with a built-in destructor (the 500 ml bubbler I use in the pictures above is not available anymore)

Hello Paola! Thank you so much for your hard work and for sharing this wonderful and helpful information.

I was wondering, do I really need an oxygen source with a low flow regulator in order to make ozonated water to drink? If so, could you please share the benefits of using the oxygen?

I already a high quality ozone generator and it has the ability to connect an oxygen bottle or oxygen generator, I just never have.

Thank you so much again for all that you do and I look forward to hearing from you soon. In the meantime, I wish you the best of health!

Is drinking a glass of ozonated water 2-3 times a day enough to eventually kill oral thrush? I assume I must have some overgrowth in the gut since it has been soo hard to get rid of. I use the simple Aqua-6 ozonator. Thank yoo.

I triple filter my tap water with a whole-house Spring Well filter, then the refridgerator filter, then a Zero Water pitcher filter. You mentioned to avoid bromide which turns into bromate when ozonated, which is a carcinogen. How would I know if my triple-filtered water still has bromide in it?

Hello. Sorry for not giving more information. I have been ozonating water for over a year now. There is a long thin glass tube with a stone at the end which I insert into a flask for ozonating water. There are no longer any bubbles coming out of the glass tube. However when I use my water bubbler, which is a glass tube with some small holes, bubbles appear. The stone seems to be clogged. I only use distilled water so not sure why it is no longer working. Thank you for your time and quick response.

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Kareen,

I don't know what the stone is clogged with, you're not saying.

A stone should only be used to ozonate water, so it shouldn't become clogged. Unless we are talking calcifications which can be removed with vinegar.

If you used the stone to bubble ozone through oil (what you shouldn't do, see here: https://thepowerofozone.com/why-you-shouldnt-use-a-water-bubbler-to-ozonate-oils/) , then I would probably try to remove the oil first with soap and then with vinegar and possibly run oxygen through it while soaking it in soap or vinegar water.

Hi Paola, I want to know if you would be willing to review some of our (strictly water ozonating) products; that utilize a new way to dissolve ozone into water. We are a small Wisconsin based company. We understand that you are completely un-biased in your approach, and we would like more people to know about our products. Thank you,

I have a Berkey gravity fed water filter for ALL of the water I consume. But I'd like to make it more acidic so it holds the ozone longer. Which salt do you recommend to make the water more acidic? I also drink a lot of fresh lemonade so I always have lemons on hand. If I used some fresh lemon juice, will a couple drops of stevia affect the ozonated water?
I bought your book on ozone, and didn't see a recommendation.

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Sarah,

from my quick research the way to reduce the pH of water is to

      – add sea salt (but will increase the mineral content of the water and so reduce the ability of the water to hold ozone, so I wouldn't recommend it)
      – add CO2 (this may also have two effects of both reducing the pH but also adding another molecule to the equation with which the ozone will react, so not sure this would work)
      – add hydrogen (this may be the best method, but it would be a matter of testing it out)

In general, I think the best is to use either distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water, they may not be acidic but hold a good amount of ozone.

I would definitely not use any lemon juice or stevia to ozonated water, this will mostly neutralize the ozone.

      I hope this helps.

This may be a stupid question but what is the mg/h required in order to treat chronic diseases? Can the Ozone generator products found in Amazon work for this? If so can you recommend any specific one? And how many cups of this ozonated water would be needed daily. Thank you so much for your help as I know this is a loaded question but need some direction from a professional. Appreciate all your help on this.

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Sue,

It depends on what chronic illness you are treating and how you will respond.

I think air-fed ozone generators that produce around 600 mg/h in ozone output are adequate for ozone water.

Type in “ozone generator water” into the amazon search, and whatever pops up in the 600 mg/h to 1000 mg/h range should work. The Aqua-6 or Airthereal should do it …

FYI: those machines typically burn out within a few months though …

Hi Paola. Thank you for all the wonderful information. Question: How empty should your stomach be for 03 water? And how long after taking vitamin C? Thank you.

      Hi Michael,

wait at least 3 hours after you drank ozonated water before you eat something.

After taking vitamin C (as an oral supplement), I would wait at least one hour. If you take the vit C in intravenous form, I would give it 2 or 3 hours.

    Hello Paola,

I am new to ozone, sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm curious as to why we'd want to leave a room from possible damage to the lungs while ozone generator is active but we're okay to drink it? And it seems that from what I've seen online, when making water from cheap ozone generators people don't leave the room. Wanting your take on this?

Thank you for all the content so far, it's been exhilarating to learn!

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Holly,

It is safe to ingest or expose the insides of your body (blood, vagine, rectum, ears, nose, stomach and intestines, and more) to ozone, except the lungs.

Lungs can be damaged by ozone, that's why you should avoid breathing it in.

When you drink ozonated water, you should also hold your breath for that very reason.

I can't comment on other people without specific examples, but they may have the window open or they have become less sensitive to the ozone smell, which happens sometimes. Also some lung exposure to ozone may not be outright damaging but just irritating to a point that it does not cause immediate problems for the user.

I have an elderly friend who would like to try ozone water for digestive reasons. She lives about 30 mins from me. I thought I read somewhere that you can preserve ozone water by freezing it. I was going to make her a week's worth in individual glass bottles that could be frozen and thawed in the fridge for use. Would that work?

Also, I notice that you recommend starting at about 80ug/ml, why so high?

    Reply
    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Sarah,

with ozone water you can use rather high ozone concentrations, since water only retains around 1/4 of it.

Yes, you can preserve ozone water that way, but some ozone will get lost.

If there is still ozone in the water, you can smell it. No smell, no ozone. You can use that to test the water for ozone content.

Hi Paola, we have a JED 203 ozone generator that we use for our chest freezer for cold plunge therapy. I am thinking I can use this for making drinkable ozonated water. But, in reading your site, you're using an ozone output chart setting for the water. Do you know if what we have is suitable or too strong?

    Reply
  13. Jesse

Ozone water does have a bactericidal effect, but it is not recommended for personal production and use, because it can be done for the following reasons

    1. The solubility of ozone in water is relatively low. One atmospheric pressure, one cubic meter of water at standard zero can only dissolve 1 gram of ozone, and this is far from reaching.
    2. The detection of ozone concentration in water is a big problem, and the cost is quite high. At present, only PC and ProMinent can do it, and a detector costs $3,000.
    3. The mixing of ozone in water usually needs to be pressurized. It is completed by pump and jet circulation, which is difficult in industry and cannot be completed by individuals.

    Hi Paola,

Do you think the Promolife Mini o3 generator can handle making ozonated water? If so what setting would you use? (I have not bought one yet but I was thinking of that one since it is the most affordable). And how different would be the result be from a Mini, the single and the dual generator (of Promolife) for instance. Would it be possible to reach comparable results somehow or would it definitely be not as efficient for the less powerful generators. Thank you!

    Reply
    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Jerome,

it's not ideal, but sure you can use it for water. It just won't be as potent as with a different machine, but will likely still be beneficial.

I would set it to 1/8 LPM.

The single and dual would definitely make a stronger charge, but the Mini may be alright for your needs.

Yes, I believe you could reach comparable results with the Mini, but it's possible you may have to repeat the process more times than with the other machines, but maybe not to a significant degree.

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Kelly,

it depends how much water you're ozonating.
1/32 is an extremely low flow, so if you're ozonating larger amounts of water, it may take much longer to achieve full saturation. So, in such a case, higher flows are better.

    Hello Paola,

    I found this on Amazon

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007ZHPRIG/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

And I am trying to piece everything together, the oxygen tanks are an important part of the process because it insures the most effective treatments?
Because this unit doesn't claim to require a tank; but I am thinking in theory could I not ozonate water with this and then do a rectal enema with the water… Or plug up an insufflator ear scope to this for similar results?
Guess I just don't understand why ozonators that aren't meant to be used in combination with oxygen tanks even exist… It's a little confusing.

Now that I am writing this I believe I am starting to understand.
The amazon unit is taking the air around me, which isn't 99% oxygen like what is in the tank, and therefore the effectiveness of the O3 coming out the other end will be lesser. Do I have that right?

Hope you've gotten over the bad fish,

Hi Paola. Just watched your youtube video ‘My Awesome Ozonated Water Story'. WOW, simply astonishing. That video is complete copy of what I have been going on for the past year and a half. I am speechless. I had food poisoning in 7/2019. Immediately stomach ballooned like I was pregnant 8 months. That lasted for 2-3 months when out of blue severe sharp pain started exactly in the area you were describing. Upper right liver area, under rib cage. I was thinking same as you: liver issue, gall bladder stones, ulcer, you name it. Went to GI doctor, he did ultrasound, blood work and …nothing. Actually, stool test noted h-pylori but no stones, no stool blood, liver is good, no stomach inflammation, blood work good. IS it an ulcer? I never wanted to do endoscopy with that camera going through my esophagus. Mystery. But pain persisted. Uncomfortable pain, nausea. When I eat something is hurts. I started all sorts of treatments for hpylori as I did not know for ozone. The pain has improved somewhat after few months but it is always there just change intensity. Under ribcage, causing nausea and fulness, weird feeling in stomach. Then I did gut GI Map stool test. Those results proved severe dysbiosis. I am missing good bacteria and have overgrowth of bad – klebsiella pneumonia. This gut issues are just keep progressing. In the past few months I developed all of these joint pains, tendons cracking, joints making weird noises, I can tell that tissue is being slowly destroyed. But I was out of my mind. I do not know what else can I eat. Lost 25 pounds.
And now …this video, are you an angel that answered my prayers? Wow, I am going to try making the ozone water. It looks so complicated. I hope I can get this equipment here in USA. Thank you sooo much for the video.
Have your joint pains resolved after you started drinking the water? Do you still have that stomach pain? How often and should I drink the water and how much? Can tendons/ligaments regenerate?
    THANK YOU !!!! YOU ROCK.

      Hi luka,

I am glad that you found my information informative.
Unfortunately, after I made that video, it seems that I have yet again contracted some food poisoning. I think it was from a bad piece of salmon … It may be h pylori this time … and ozonated water is helping again. It's a work in progress.

My joint pains resolved years ago when I switched to paleo diet, and then 3 years ago I had another flare up due to high oxalate foods (carrots, celeriac, beets) which resolved within a few days after going carnivore.

I believe that tendons and ligaments can regenerate, yes.

I would drink the water every day on an empty stomach, and a lot – until symptoms go away. This can take a few weeks. Anything between 2 to 4 big glasses. Or more if you can. Make sure you supplement with vitamin C or citrus fruits in that time.

Have you ever did gut microbiome test. I did one few months back GI MAP 360. On scale 1-5 i was 5. Total mess and all that with 2 doses antibiotics, nuked my gut.
I am aso considering fecal transplant in Taymount clinic, London. I heard good stories on people recovering their gut.
      Take care

Hello I was wondering if taking probiotics is required after drinking ozone water? I have tried taking it for the duration of the treatment with ozonated water but it seems to stir up my Candida. I am afraid of depleting good flora along with killing off the bad guys.

Hi Paola, nothing too jarring but the only thing that is noticeable is that it may make my stomach area feel a little irritated and uneasy. But I always thought I would have die-off symptoms like diarrhea but not a peep. Now my tongue is a totally different story. I'm not sure if it is making my tongue whiter or better. I know my tongue gets worse when I add probiotics. Now that I think about it, ozone could have improved the thick layer but each time I add probiotics it causes it to flare and then I can't discern what is causing what. But I feared disturbing my microbiome, which is why I was afraid to discontinue the probiotics. I was in major benzo withdrawals for years which completely destroyed my health, followed by high birth control pills to stop a year long bleed. That BCP treatment damaged my body in ways that I can't even speak of and I regretted taking it. Prior to all this, I was given antibiotics for Lyme disease that also deteriorated my health mentally and physically. It's safe to say my gut is completely destroyed and the Candida that ravaged my body was like none other. Ozone is my way of healing my body and ridding Lyme and other infections. So while I need to rid my gut of Candida and who knows what else, I was afraid that I may be low in good probiotics also. No evidence I am low, but there is that concern.

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi June,

if there are no obvious digestive disturbance besides the irritation and uneasiness, then I don't think this warrants some special intervention ….

But: the irritation/uneasiness could be due to ozone killing something off in the stomach or upper small intestinal area. There should be no bacteria there to begin with, so maybe ozone is “cleaning up shop” and that irritation is the die-off symptom …

The way to find out if it's an ozone induced die-off reaction, may sound a bit crazy, but it's: to drink more ozonated water and see if the irritation/uneasiness diminishes or goes away.

The idea here is that IF the irritation is because of dying microorganisms from ozone, then more ozone will clear out the debris from the dead microorganisms which caused the irritation. Not sure I'm explaining this well. But it's a matter of trying it out.

I'm curious about one thing: Did ozone help you with the benzo withdrawal? Or were you done with that when you started doing ozone?

As ozone therapy also kills fungus, I thought that you might like to look at it. His website is https://knowthecause.com, he is on YouTube, and his books Fungus Link may be in your library.
