How to Ozonate Olive Oil (Step-by-Step Guide)

This is a step-by-step guide how to ozonate olive oil at home.

Ozonated olive oil is a popular home remedy. Topically, it’s used as a moisturizer, to help with wound healing, dry skin, sunburns, rashes, acne, inflammation or infections.

Internally, ozonated olive oil has been used as medicine under the name “rizoil” and can be acquired in nearly every pharmacy in Germany. It’s used by naturopaths as a natural antimicrobial.

Equipment you need to ozonate olive oil

The equipment I used in this guide employs a triple anti-oil protection to make sure no oil gets into the ozone generator.

  1. Oxygen source with a low flow regulator
  2. Ozone generator
  3. 2 x trap
  4. Oil bubbler
  5. 2 x check valve
  6. Destructor
  7. 6 silicone pieces of each around 8 to 20 inches length
  8. A luer lock and a quick connector

Scroll down to find links to the equipment I used in the pictures below.

How to ozonate olive oil, step by step:

Suggested settings

Ozone concentration: max ozone concentration, 70 to 100 mcg/ml
Oxygen flow: 1/8 LPM
Duration: several days

Suggested settings

Ozone concentration:

70 to 100 mcg/ml

Oxygen flow:

1/8 LPM

Duration:

several days

1. Plug the oxygen concentrator into the power supply.

2. Turn the oxygen concentrator on.

3. Set it to 2 LPM. Let it warm up for a few minutes. In the meantime set up the rest of the equipment.

4. Turn the OFF valve of the external low flow regulator so that it points towards the regulator.

5. Connect the oxygen concentrator with the external low flow regulator. Since you turned the valve of the regulator to OFF, the oxygen flows freely without entering the regulator as long as it's warming up.

6. Connect the “O2 out” port of the external low flow regulator with the “Oxygen In” port of the ozone generator.

7. Take two silicone pieces, one luer lock connector, and one check valve. Connect the check valve with the two silicone pieces as depicted below.

8. Use the silicone piece with the check valve you just assembled to connect the “Ozone Out” port of the ozone generator with the inlet of the first trap.

9. Fill the oil bubbler with olive oil.

10. Take another piece of silicone tubing and connect the outlet of the first trap with the inlet of the oil bubbler.

11. Connect the oil bubbler with the second trap. Make sure you connect the outlet of the oil bubbler with the inlet of the trap, not the other way around.

12. Connect the second trap with the destructor. Use the second check valve to do that. (The second trap and the second check valve protect the destructor from getting clogged up with oil)

13. This is how the set up looks like when everything is hooked up correctly with the triple oil protection.

14. Let's turn it on. First, plug the ozone generator into the power supply.

15. Turn the OFF valve of the external low flow regulator so that it points down. Now, the oxygen flows into the regulator.

16. Turn the knob of the external low flow regulator until the little black ball points to 1/8 LPM.

17. Turn the ozone generator on. Chose the maximum ozone concentration. In the case of the Promolife Dual Cell that means turning both knobs to setting 5.

18. If you're using one of the home ozone generators, I recommend to take breaks every 40 to 60 min and let the machine cool down for an hour.

19. If you turn it off for the night, unhook the trap from the ozone out port on the ozone generator. This is part of the triple anti-oil protection. When you turn the equipment off, do so in the following order: first, turn the ozone generator off, then the oxygen concentrator, then unhook the silicone tubing from the “Ozone Out” port.

20. Once the oil starts getting thicker, increase the flow to 1/2 LPM.

21. Ozonate the oil until it turns clear and gooey. It took me around 2 weeks of ozonating it for 1 to 4 hours every day.

22. Turn everything off, in the same order as above: first, the ozone generator, then the oxygen concentrator, then unhook the trap from the generator.

23. Pour the oil into a jar.

24. Refrigerate it. After a while the oil will turn solid. If you let it stand outside in room temperature, it will turn liquid again.

25. Final notes: It took me around 2 weeks to ozonate the oil. It was a drag. I was taking breaks and switching up the generators since I did not feel comfortable letting them run for hours at a time. I don't think the home ozone machines are made for such marathon ozonating efforts. I ozonated the oil for 1 to 4 hours every day.

I think the best solution to ozonated oil is to either

a) buy an industrial ozone machine and hook it up to an oxygen concentrator,

b) buy the ready made oil, or

c) use the by-product from doing Breathing Ozonated Olive Oil

What is the triple anti-oil protection?

When ozonating oils the most important thing is to make sure that the ozone generator is protected from the oil.

When oil gets into an ozone generator, the generator can't be saved.

In the above instructions I employ a triple anti-oil protection which may look like an overkill but which gives me peace of mind that my generator is protected. It consists of the following three steps:

  1. A trap prevents any oil from flowing back into the machine.
  2. Check valve: this is an additional feature to make sure no liquids flow back into the generator. A check valve allows gas and liquids to pass only in one direction and blocks their flow in the opposite direction.
  3. Unhooking the tubing from the ozone generator whenever I turn the equipment off.

My triple anti-oil protection consists of a trap, a check valve, and unhooking of the silicone tubing whenever I turn the ozone generator off for the day.

What is ozonated olive oil used for?

Ozonated olive oil can be used topically, or internally.

Topically it can be applied on the skin in cases of rashes, acne, sunburn, as a moisturizer, or to promote wound healing.

It has been also successfully used on basal cell carcinoma.

Internally, it can be swallowed or inserted as a suppository.

When ingested it can help with digestive problems of various kind, like bloating, ulcers, cramps, diarrhea or constipation.

The use as a suppository can help with anal fissures, hemorrhoids, or constipation.

Risks and Contraindications of ozonated olive oil

There are two different types of risks which can occur with ozonated olive oil: one is during the production process, the second is during its application.

The risk when making ozonated olive oil is fire hazard. As good as every producer of ozonated olive oil reports having had to deal with a fire outbreak. For this reason it's important to never leave the oil unsupervised.

The risk due to ingestion or other therapeutical purposes are nausea (ozonated olive oil tastes revolting), or a rash when used topically.

Contraindications are transplanted organs, hyperthyroidism, or a sensitivity to the oil.

The Crazy Ozone Lady's take on ozonated olive oil

When it comes to making ozonated olive oil: I'm not a fan of the process and I prefer to outsource this activity to other people and buy the finished product.

When it comes to using it topically: I'm one of the rare cases of ozonated olive oil sensitivity. My skin becomes red and swollen after the application of the oil. This seems to happen only with certain ozonated oils, not with all.

As to ingesting it: because of the horrid taste I prefer to drink ozonated water or take Oxy-powder.

      Hi Helen,

thank you for pointing it out. It seems Promolife discountiued their ozonated oil kit, so I removed it from the list.

Why can't you purchase that ozone generator while living on the West Coast? They don't ship to where you are? If so, and if it is due to some regulations, then I am afraid you will have that problem with any other ozone generator, I can imagine. You want one that allows for an external oxygen source to be attached, like an oxygen tank or an oxygen concentrator.

      Hi Kristy,

I would do it until it resolves completely.

Disclaimer: There is no guarantee that it will work and it is not to be understood as an endorsement of ozone as a cancer cure.

    Hi Paola,

I too am a big fan of yours, having spent many hours on your site and following all of your recommendations, thank you for all of your intelligence, wisdom and generosity towards all of us who are learning how to become healthier humans. On the subject of making ozonated olive oil–as a recent Promolife customer, I contacted owner Tobias Segal in regards to the safe length of time per day of using the O3 dual Elite with the EverFlo oxygen concentrator in making oil, here is his reply:

“This machine can run for multiple hours at a time and I typically recommend running no more than 12 hours at a time. Bubbling oil or water does not matter.

Also, there really isn't a limit for the o2 concentrator.”

My question: In making a cup of ozonated oil, how many hours @ 75 gamma (1/8 LPM) would you estimate it would take?

      Hi Paul,

thank you for reading my stuff.

I think if you want to achieve full saturation of the oil, it will probably take around 24 to 36 hours ….

    Hello Paula,

also If I use a industrial ozone machine , how can I know the Oxigen flow needed from the O2 concentrator machine ?

    Reply
    • Paola Dziwetzki

You need to check the technical specifications of your ozone generator, they should tell you what flow to use on the oxygen concentrator.
If they're not there, I would probably go with 1/4 to 1/2 LPM, but also depending on how much oil is being ozonated. The more oil, the higher the oxygen flow may be necessary to saturate the whole batch.

    Hello Paula,

Is there any literature / books how to ozonate oils ? , also if i use a powerfull ozone 5 grams or 10 grams ozone machine what is the time , when do I know that the oil is ozonated ?

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Comsulea,

I am not aware of any books which deal specifically with ozonating oils …
You know that the oil is done when it becomes nearly translucent and gooey.

Thanks for your wonderful information on Oil ozonation. We are planning for 20 liters of sunflower oil per day say in 24 hours. Can you please suggest on precautions we should take like
      1) how to avoid fire ? inspite of traps and check valves what is the source for fire?. Fire can happen in ozone generator and or destructor correct?

      2) how to reduce the time for ozonation completion time ?

      3) how to check the adequacy of ozonation? what to be lab tested ? When the medicinal properties are reached say hours at what O3 level? Is colour of any indication?
      Thanks in advance

    • Paola Dziwetzki

      Hi Asogan,

      1) Keep checking on the oil and keep checking the temperature to make sure it's not getting too hot. No, I think the fire happens with the oil itself. Contact Paul Harvey at ozonatedoilonline.com to find out more.

      2) Use oxygen fed industrial ozone generators at very high ozone concentrations (I know someone who uses a 5,000 mg/h machine for oils).

      3) There are ways to test oils, but I don't know too much about it. Again contact Paul from the page I mentioned or promolife.com . Color and consistency of the oil are an indication. When it reaches maximum ozone saturation it becomes translucent and gooey.

    Hi Paola,

I found you on YouTube. I love your videos!!! I want to thank you for all this amazing information that you give us. My mom had skin cancer and my diabetic dad had big wounds; they got cured thanks for the ozonetherapy and to you. After reading all the information on your website and watching your videos I had the courage to bring my parents to start the ozone treatment. You made a difference in our lives; thanks for that!

So I got excited and I bought an ozone machine from China to ozonate oils…

Model: AOT-MD-520; this unit has a German generating method of corona discharge, a quartz tubing and titanium electrode. The company says that this machine has a certificate of compliance CE and also a European certificate of registration ISO: 13485. Do you think I should trust this machine?

      Hi Edson,

this is amazing! I'm glad your family got a benefit from my information.

As to the machine: if you are looking specifically for something to ozonate oils, I'd rather get an industrial grade generator with an oxygen concentrator as the feed gas.

The one you have may work as well, but it could burn out quickly. For oils it's better to use high powered machines. Even better than that: buy the ready made ozonated oils instead of making them.

      I hope this helps!

      Best,
